Joe Bugner, Heavyweight Boxer and Former European Champion, Passes Away at 75

Joe Bugner, a renowned heavyweight boxer and former European champion, has passed away at the age of 75 in a care home in Brisbane, Australia. The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) announced his death on Monday.

Born in Hungary, Bugner moved to Britain as a child refugee following the 1956 Soviet invasion. He would later become a British citizen. His boxing career spanned an impressive 32 years, ending in 1999.

In 1971, Bugner made history by defeating Henry Cooper, a British national treasure, to capture the British, Commonwealth, and European titles. This victory sent Cooper into retirement. However, Bugner lost those belts later in the same year.

During his career, Bugner fought some of the greatest boxers of his era, including Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. His first encounter with Ali, in 1973, was a non-title fight held in Las Vegas. Ali won the fight on points. By the time of this fight, Bugner was the European champion.

Bugner and Ali met again in 1975 in a world-title fight in Kuala Lumpur, which Ali won on points in a bout over 15 rounds. Five months later, Joe Frazier also defeated Bugner on points in a fight at Earl's Court in London.

Throughout his career, Bugner won 69 of his 83 fights, with 41 wins coming inside the distance. He was affectionately known as "Aussie Joe" in his last few years as a boxer.

The BBBofC passed on its condolences to Joe Bugner's family. The chairman during the active years of Joe Bugner was not specified in the available sources.

Bugner relocated to Australia in his final years and spent his last years in a care home. He will be remembered as a formidable boxer who made significant contributions to the sport.
