In the heart of Garath, a small town in Germany, the Sportring club celebrated its 55th anniversary with a special boxing event on February 22 at Kulturhaus Süd. The day was filled with excitement, as seven boxers from Sportring Garath participated in the matches, with many young participants making their debuts.

The event was a testament to the club's commitment to nurturing young talents, a mission emphasised by the current chairman of the boxing department, Michael Oltmanns, and coach Gino Beganaj. Beganaj shared that they currently have 24 active boxers in the club and are expecting five or six more new members soon.

The chairman, Önder Yilmaz, who also serves as a boxing trainer, highlighted the importance of boxing as a tool for education, discipline, respect, decency, and fairness. He expressed his dedication to instilling these values in today's youth, acknowledging the significant amount of work, manpower, and resources required.

Yilmaz, who has been serving as Sportring chairman for over a year, shared a heartwarming story about a 12-year-old boy from Eastern Europe who started training with him. The boy always thanks him with a handshake, a simple gesture that underscores the impact Sportring has on its members.

The event also saw the inauguration of a brand new boxing ring, purchased with financial support from the Garath 2.0 availability fund and the district representation 10 (Garath, Hellerhof). This investment in infrastructure reflects the club's ambition to provide the necessary structures for the growing number of young members.

Sportring Garath, founded in 1969, has always been the sports club for Garath East, while Garath West has the Garather SV. Volker Götz, now 80 years old, served as chairman from 1980 to 2005 and is currently the club's number two, leading training sessions every Monday.

In the past, Sportring offered weightlifting, judo, volleyball, and table tennis, with deputy district mayor Jürgen Bohrmann becoming West German champion in weightlifting at some point. However, boxing remains the core of Sportring, as evident at the Kulturhaus, where many young boxers made their debuts.

Many matches ended in draws due to the inexperience of the young boxers, a testament to the learning process they are going through. Despite the challenges, the spirit of camaraderie and determination was palpable throughout the event.
