Brausilvester: Austria's New Autumn Beer & Gansl Feast

Mohrenbrauerei recently hosted a grand Brausilvester event in Dornbirn, combining live music, a fair, and a celebration of domestic breweries near me. This event reflects the growing appreciation for authentic, regional, and high-quality food, with the pairing of perfectly prepared Gansl and specially crafted beer from breweries near me emerging as a modern domestic indulgence.

The event showcased the versatility of Gansl, moving it from a seasonal tradition to a year-round luxury delicacy. The menu extended beyond the classic roast, featuring Gansl liver cheese, Gansl preserves soup, and Fregola Sarda Risotto with Gansl. The 'Handwerk Restaurant' in Vienna even serves Wiener Gansl specialties year-round under the motto 'GOOSE OR NOTHING'.

Historically, beer brewing was confined to the cooler months between Michaeli (September 29th) and Georgi (April 23rd) due to lack of cooling. Brausilvester, a nearly forgotten tradition, is now experiencing a renaissance on September 30th, marking the end of the old and the beginning of the new brewing year. This event supports Austria's brewing industry, which generated over 1.4 billion euros in turnover in 2023 and employs around 3,500 people. Restaurants offer beer pairings with their Gansl menus to create cohesive experiences, such as serving a free-range goose from Burgenland with a special beer brewed in the new brewing year.

Brausilvester has the potential to become a fixed part of Austria's autumn event calendar, with support from associations and breweries. The event not only celebrates domestic breweries but also contributes to the economic growth of the industry, with the Austrian brewery that achieved the highest revenue of about 1.4 billion euros in 2023 playing a significant role.
