Breakaway victory by Marc Soler in stage 14 of the Vuelta a España, with Joao Almeida and Jonas Vingegaard remaining in a stalemate after another intense competition.
Marc Soler Claims Victory in Stage 14 of La Vuelta a España
Marc Soler of UAE Team Emirates-XRG has secured a thrilling victory in stage 14 of the Vuelta a España, with Jonas Vingegaard of Visma-Lease a Bike finishing second. Soler's teammate, Joao Almeida, completed the podium in third place.
The mountain-top finish to the Alto de la Farrapona provided a challenging backdrop for the dramatic conclusion of the stage. Soler, along with 21 other riders, formed the early breakaway, including Victor Campenaerts, James Shaw (EF Education-EasyPost), Finlay Pickering (Bahrain Victorious), and Felix Gall (Decathlon-AG2R).
As the race progressed, UAE Team Emirates-XRG took control of the front, setting the pace on the first of two concluding first-category climbs with 40km to go. Soler moved clear of the breakaway on the valley road heading into the final climb of the Alto de la Farrapona.
Felix Gall took on the chase, with Pidcock bobbing up and down, fighting to stay in touch. Pickering, putting in the best performance of his career so far, attacked the chase group in pursuit of Soler. However, it was not enough to catch the leader.
In the final kilometre, Jai Hindley of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe attacked to shorten his deficit to Tom Pidcock's podium place. Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) got on the front for team-mate Hindley with 2.5km to go.
Soler's win marks the seventh win for UAE Team Emirates-XRG in this race. It is Soler's fourth Vuelta stage win and his fourth career stage win at La Vuelta, with victories in 2020, 2022, 2024, and 2025.
Vingegaard extended his lead in the maillot rojo by a further two seconds over Almeida. Soler expressed his happiness about his unexpected win and the game he played during the stage. The team manager of UAE Team Emirates-XRG, Joxean Fernández Matxin, will no doubt be pleased with the team's performance.
The race continues, with the riders facing more challenges in the days to come. Soler's victory in stage 14 has added an exciting twist to the overall standings, making the race even more unpredictable.
