Bridge A1 Weser will experience closure for several hours tonight.
The A1 Weser Bridge, a vital artery for around 130,000 vehicles daily, is currently undergoing extensive renovation works. These works, part of an ongoing monthly schedule until the end of the year, are necessary due to the frequent wear and damage affecting the bridge's steel structure, bearings, and road surface.
The renovation works, carried out by DEGES, are complex due to the bridge's location within a nature reserve. As a result, materials for the renovation are transported by ship along with a ponton, rather than by truck on the road.
The closures are planned to continue until the end of the year, with significant disruptions expected. Between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM, the lane heading towards Hamburg will be closed, while the lane heading towards Osnabrück will be closed from 10:00 PM to midnight. Traffic will be rerouted during these times to minimise inconvenience.
Residents in areas like Arsten or Habenhausen have been experiencing constant gridlock due to these traffic issues. Around 400 cracks need to be repaired on the Weser Bridge, and approximately 6,000 "weld repairs" are required for the renovation works.
Inspections will be conducted on one weekend per month, with the A1 Weser Bridge set to be completely closed for two lanes in the early hours of Sunday. It is important to note that the closures are part of the renovation works being carried out on the Weser Bridge.
At present, there is no information available identifying the company responsible for the comprehensive renovation work on the A1 Weser Bridge. Despite the disruptions, the renovation works are crucial to ensure the bridge remains safe and functional for the large number of vehicles that rely on it daily.
