Tour of Britain: Olav Kooij Claims Second Successive Win in Wet Conditions

Under the relentless rain and a grey British summer sky, the second stage of the Tour of Britain saw a thrilling finish with Olav Kooij (Soudal-QuickStep) claiming his second successive win.

The stage began with an early attack, consisting of Baptiste Veistroffer (Lotto), Andreas Stokbro Nielsen, Hartthijs de Vries (Unibet Tietema Rockets), Rafael Reis (Anicolor-Tien 21), and Great Britain duo Ben Wiggins and Josh Charlton. However, an unfortunate crash involving both Great Britain team riders, Wiggins and Charlton, occurred early on.

Visma-Lease a Bike took control of the chase throughout the stage, ensuring the peloton stayed together. Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) took a conspicuous turn at the front of the peloton before the catch, three kilometres from the line.

Meanwhile, a group of four riders formed the main breakaway more than 150km into the stage. One of the riders in this group was not explicitly identified in the search results. Andreas Stokbro attacked on the main climb of the day - the short Semer Hill, but was reeled in before the sprint finish began.

In the final kilometre, Kooij seemed out of position, but managed to swing into a solid position in the final corner. Kooij found his own way around to the right wheel and went for the sprint at 200 metres, outpacing Tom Crabbé (Bahrain Victorious) and Sam Watson (Trinity Racing) to take the win.

Kooij credited the team's smart work for his success. "The rain suits me well," Kooij said after the race. "The team did a great job in preparing my charge for the win."

The results of the stage, powered by FirstCycling, saw Kooij in first place, Tom Crabbé finishing in second, and Sam Watson in third. The Tour of Britain continues with the third stage tomorrow.
