British managerial role discussions with surprise disclosure by Mark van Bommel during summertime

Mark van Bommel, the Dutch football manager, has expressed his interest in managing in the English Premier League after leading Royal Antwerp to a historic domestic double in the 2022/23 season.

Van Bommel's impressive tenure at Antwerp saw them secure their first Belgian Pro League title in 66 years, with a thrilling 3-2 win over Genk in the final match. This victory was made even sweeter as Toby Alderweireld scored the winning goal in the second-half stoppage time, finding the top left-hand corner from distance.

The Belgian Cup was also added to Antwerp's trophy cabinet, with a 2-0 victory over Mechelen in the final. Van Bommel's time at Royal Antwerp is his most notable achievement as a manager to date.

Rumours have circulated about Van Bommel's potential move to a British club, with the specific club remaining undisclosed in the provided search results. However, it is known that he has not managed since his departure from Antwerp at the end of his contract in June 2024.

Van Bommel has previously played once for PSV, a Dutch football club, and has shown a keen interest in managing in the English Premier League. If he were to accept a formal offer to take over at a British club, he would become the second Dutch boss alongside Liverpool manager Arne Slot.

In the Scottish league, Van Bommel sees potential for success, with the goal of becoming champion and playing in Europe. It is worth noting that former managers Dick Advocaat and Giovanni van Bronckhorst have previously managed at Glasgow Rangers, with the latter leading the club to the Scottish Premiership title in the 2021/22 season.

However, it was ultimately Rangers who appointed Russell Martin as their new manager, rather than Van Bommel. Martin's tenure at the club has not gone to plan, with the team failing to qualify for the Champions League.

Despite the missed opportunity at Rangers, Van Bommel remains optimistic about his future in the English Premier League. His admiration for the atmosphere at Antwerp, which he finds similar to that at Rangers, suggests that he would thrive in the passionate and competitive environment of the English top-flight.
