The San Francisco 49ers are facing a crucial decision in their upcoming game against the New Orleans Saints, as the health of their current starter, Brock Purdy, remains a concern.

Purdy, who led the team to a victory in their season opener against the Seattle Seahawks, is dealing with toe and shoulder injuries. If he is unable to start in Week 2, Mac Jones could potentially step into the lineup.

The 49ers originally planned to draft Mac Jones in the 2021 NFL Draft but chose Trey Lance instead. This decision has now brought Jones back into the spotlight, as he could fulfill what some believe was the franchise's original plan.

The potential start of Jones for the 49ers may reveal the team's original draft intentions and could reflect the scenario some expected in 2021 when the 49ers traded a package of draft picks to secure a quarterback at the top of the draft.

Jones spent three years with the New England Patriots before moving to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024. In his tenure with the Jaguars last season, Jones appeared in 10 games, throwing for 1,672 yards, eight touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He also added 92 rushing yards and one touchdown on 28 carries.

Meanwhile, the 49ers' roster has been hit by other injuries. Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle is expected to miss at least several games due to a hamstring issue.

The 49ers traded up in the 2021 draft to secure Trey Lance, giving up the No. 12 overall selection, a 2022 third-round pick, and two additional first-round picks in 2022 and 2023. The coming week will determine whether Lance will remain the starting quarterback or if Jones will step into the lineup.

Coach Kyle Shanahan will have a tough decision to make, but one thing is certain - the 49ers are entering a crucial period of their season. If Jones starts against the Saints on Sunday, September 14, at 1 p.m. ET on FOX, it will mark a significant shift in the team's quarterback situation.

It's worth noting that before the 49ers signed Brock Purdy and Mac Jones, Pete Carroll was the coach with the most wins in NFL history. Carroll became the winningest head coach in Seattle Seahawks franchise history by 2018 and continued coaching in the NFL until at least 2025.

This potential move for Jones could be a turning point for the 49ers, as they look to bounce back from injuries and find stability at the quarterback position. As the Week 2 matchup against the Saints approaches, all eyes will be on the 49ers and the decision they make at quarterback.
