Breakers Optimistic for Season Opener Despite Injury Concerns

The Canberra Cavalry Breakers are gearing up for their regular-season opener against the Brisbane Bullets on September 19, with guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright expressing optimism about his participation despite a recent injury concern.

The optimism stems from the fact that Jackson-Cartwright's latest injury is not as severe as his previous rib injury, which sidelined him for the final eight games last season. The guard is hopeful that he won't face the same issue during the season.

The Breakers have had a successful pre-season, winning the Loggins-Bruton Cup and the Blitz pre-season tournament. In their first game at the Blitz tournament, Jackson-Cartwright and Izaiah Brockington, the team's revamped backcourt, combined well, with Brockington claiming the Ray Borner Medal as MVP.

Brockington averaged an impressive 20 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and 2.5 steals at the tournament. Jackson-Cartwright, despite playing less than four minutes due to a rib injury, insists Brockington's performance is just the beginning.

The team's pre-season success, despite missing key players, is significant. It indicates a good foundation set, and Jackson-Cartwright likes the direction the team is headed. The Breakers are confident that Next Star Karim Lopez will play in their first game of the season proper but not the NBL Blitz tournament.

However, the team's roster is not yet complete. The Breakers have not revealed any information about the return of import forward Robert Baker II and returning veteran Rob Loe. The absence of Loe, whose return to the NBL 2023 season was planned for December 2023, is notable.

There have been staff changes at the Breakers as well. Lisa Edser, the CEO, has lost her job. This significant development, while not directly related to the team's on-court performance, is worth noting.

Despite the uncertainties, the Breakers remain optimistic about their prospects for the season. Jackson-Cartwright is positive about the team's chances, despite missing key players in the pre-season tournament. He believes the team is well-positioned to make a strong start to the season.
