Brothers Menendez Maintain Their Imprisonment
In a recent turn of events, the parole applications of Erik and Lyle Menendez, who have been serving their sentences since 1990 for the murder of their parents Jose and Kitty Menendez in 1989, have been denied.
The brothers, who were 19 and 21 years old at the time of the crime, initially denied any involvement in the murders that took place in the living room of their parents' home in Beverly Hills. However, in subsequent trials, they claimed they had been abused for years by their parents, allegations that were supported by descriptions of abuse by the father in the first trial, although it ended in a mistrial.
The prosecution argued that the brothers committed the murders out of greed to gain access to their parents' fortune. In the second trial, the brothers were found guilty of double murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. However, a judge in Los Angeles set a new sentence for the brothers of 50 years in prison in May of this year, opening the possibility of parole.
During their incarceration, the brothers have been involved in various prison programs, including anger management and meditation. Relatives and friends of the Menendez brothers have highlighted their involvement in these programs as evidence of their rehabilitation.
However, the brothers' violations of prison rules, including the illegal use of cell phones, played a significant role in the decision to deny their parole applications. In 2022, both Erik and Lyle Menendez's parole applications were denied.
The denial of Lyle Menendez's application was on Friday (local time), and the denial of Erik Menendez's application was the day before. The brothers' supporters, which include family members and friends who believe they acted in self-defense after years of abuse, have expressed disappointment but continue to fight for the release of both brothers.
Despite the denial of their parole applications, some family members, like Menendez-Baralt, who hoped to welcome Erik home before her death from cancer, continue to advocate for the brothers' release. However, the parole boards have repeatedly denied release due to the brothers’ ongoing risks and Erik Menendez's misconduct in prison.
