Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes turned 31 on [insert date], and the Portuguese midfielder received a flood of birthday messages from his former teammates. One of the most notable messages came from Juan Mata, who shared a throwback photo of a young, goofy, long-haired Fernandes on Instagram.

Mata, who played 278 Premier League games for Manchester United, scoring 52 goals and racking up 54 assists, captioned the image in Spanish, wishing Fernandes a happy birthday and expressing his love for him. The former Spanish international, who collected another FA Cup and Europa League during his time at Manchester United, also reminisced about their friendship and the good times they shared on the pitch.

Fernandes, who took Mata's No.8 shirt upon his departure, responded to the post with laughing emojis, indicating his embarrassment at the throwback photo. Mata, who made his name at traditional Spanish side Valencia before joining Chelsea, added a heartfelt message to his collection of birthday wishes.

Mata and Fernandes played together 37 times before Mata left for Galatasaray in 2022. During their time together, the duo developed a strong friendship, and their bond was evident on the pitch as they often combined for some of Manchester United's most memorable moments.

Other former teammates who sent messages to Fernandes on his birthday included Alejandro Garnacho, a former Manchester United academy graduate who recently joined Chelsea, and Jadon Sancho, who is currently on loan at Aston Villa. Mason Mount, Manuel Ugarte, Harry Maguire, and others also joined in the celebrations, sending their well-wishes to the Portuguese midfielder.

Fernandes, who has been a key figure for Manchester United since his arrival in 2020, has faced criticism in the past, but he responded to a label from Gabby Agbonlahor, who labeled him 'the worst teammate' at United, by stating that Agbonlahor had never played with him.

As of 2025, Mata is currently playing for Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia, while Fernandes continues to lead Manchester United's charge in the Premier League. Despite his move to Australia, Mata's bond with Fernandes remains strong, and it is clear that the two will always share a special connection.
