France and Britain's joint funding for nuclear armaments receives backing from Spahn - Budget draft for the years 2000-06 has also sought input from the Commission.
In a recent discussion, German Health Minister Jens Spahn was approached about the potential deployment of German peacekeeping troops in Ukraine. However, Spahn was evasive on the matter, stating that the current focus should be on diplomatic efforts.
Spahn emphasized that Europe needs the capability for deterrence, and suggested that alliances with countries like France or Britain could be beneficial in this regard. He reiterated his belief that Europe needs a strong stance to ensure peace and security, and that the necessary debate on nuclear deterrence in Europe should be led by Germany if it is to take place.
The minister also shared that the Ukrainians have expressed their belief that their own army is the best security guarantee. In response to this, Spahn stated that unfortunately, they are far from peace in Ukraine, as Putin still wants war.
In terms of financial contributions, Spahn has supported Germany financially contributing to the nuclear arsenals of France and the United Kingdom to jointly modernize and expand their atomic weapons as part of building a deterrence in Europe. However, he clarified that these discussions are not directly related to the current situation in Ukraine.
Spahn also mentioned that the first request from Ukraine is to be equipped and help sustain an army of 800,000 men. He did not elaborate on Germany's potential role in this matter.
It is important to note that Spahn's advocacy for co-financing nuclear arsenals, his belief in Europe's need for deterrence, and his statements regarding leading the debate on nuclear deterrence in Europe are not directly related to the current discussion about Ukraine.
The minister's stance on Ukraine and European deterrence reflects a complex approach, balancing diplomatic efforts with the need for a strong defensive posture. As the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Germany's role develops in this context.
