In the early hours of August 28, 2025, a city bus in Bamberg was found with a bullet hole in a window, causing an estimated 2,000 euros worth of damage. The Bamberg-Stadt Police Inspectorate announced the incident on September 3, 2025.

The attack has raised concerns among various professional groups, including those in public transport, hospitals, schools, public administration, fire brigade, rescue services, public order office, police, railways, street cleaning, and waste management. The violence-induced illnesses and dismissals have led to essential societal tasks often being only partially or not at all fulfilled.

Dirk Schneider, the trade union secretary for public transport in western Upper Franconia, expressed concern for the physical and mental well-being of colleagues after the bus shooting incident. Mathias Eckhardt, DGB regional manager in Upper Franconia, called for an end to the increasingly frequent violence against employees in the public sector and privatized sector. Jan Storbeck, trade union secretary for utilities and waste management in Upper Franconia, reacted with incomprehension to the incident and demanded safety and respect for employees at Bamberg city works and all public and privatized sectors.

Verdi, a trade union, is particularly concerned about the safety of the approximately 200 employees in the driving, workshop, and administration services of the Bamberg city works. The union condemns the shooting of the bus and demands respect for the employees of the public sector.

The DGB initiative "Never forget, a human being works here" has been advocating for the protection and respect of these employees since 2020. The organization that addressed the safety of employees in public administration and privatization sectors in a press release on September 4, 2025, after a bus in Bamberg was shot at by an unknown person the day before, is not identified in the available search results.

Forensic investigators found a matching steel ball on the premises, and the police are conducting criminal technical investigations to identify the perpetrator. Witnesses are asked to contact the police at 0951/9129-210.

As the investigation continues, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring the safety and respect for employees in the public and privatized sectors. The unprovoked attack on a city bus in Bamberg underscores the urgent need for action to combat the rising incidents of violence against workers.
