In a one-sided affair played under the lights in Provo, Utah, on Saturday night, BYU handed Portland State a resounding 69-0 defeat. The Cougars' impressive offensive display was too much for the visiting Vikings to handle.

Bear Bachmeier, a true freshman quarterback, made his collegiate debut for BYU in this season opener. After transferring from Stanford following spring practices, Bachmeier secured the starting job and delivered an impressive performance.

The game began with BYU extending their lead to 14-0 on the final play of the first quarter, thanks to a 4-yard touchdown pass from Bachmeier to Chase Roberts. The second quarter saw a flurry of scoring from the Cougars, as they totaled 287 yards and averaged 13.7 yards per play.

Bachmeier threw for three touchdowns and ran for two others in his debut. His first touchdown pass of the night went to Noah Moeaki, followed by a score to Carsen Ryan. Cody Hagen also got in on the action, scoring his first career touchdown for BYU on a 57-yard reverse in the second quarter.

LJ Martin led the Cougars' ground game with 131 yards on eight carries, while Bachmeier added 32 yards on the ground. Bachmeier finished the game with 97 yards on 7-of-11 passing.

Portland State struggled offensively throughout the game, averaging just 1.2 yards per play. CJ Jordan led the Vikings in passing with 58 yards on 8-of-14 attempts. Despite the lopsided score, the search results do not contain information about the coach who trained the BYU football team in the season opener.

The Cougars churned out 468 yards and five touchdowns on the ground during the game, further highlighting their dominance on both sides of the ball. The impressive victory sets a strong tone for BYU as they move forward in the season.
