California Indigenous Communities Gearing Up for Contest with Profitable Sweepstakes Casino Industry

In recent times, the popularity of sweepstakes casinos in California has been on the rise, but not without causing concern among tribes and cardrooms in the state. These casinos, while offering free-to-play casino-style games, have been accused of exploiting legal loopholes to provide unregulated gambling.

During a weekly webinar hosted by the Indian Gaming Association, this issue was a key topic of discussion. Victor Rocha, the conference chairperson, expressed his belief that it is up to tribes to address the issue. Rocha also announced his intention to hold additional webinars on the matter.

Sweepstakes casinos are not traditional casinos, as real money withdrawals are not possible in the traditional sense. Instead, players can use money to buy non-withdrawable virtual coins. This unregulated nature has become a source of concern for tribes in California, who fear the potential consequences of unchecked gambling.

Similar moves have been made by state gaming regulators, who have sent cease-and-desist letters to offshore gambling site Bovada. NIGC Executive Director Jason Giles has proposed a solution involving tribes from various states sending such letters to sweepstakes casino operators.

The growth of sweepstakes casinos is a significant issue for tribes and cardrooms in California. Siva, the Chairperson of California Nations Indian Gaming Association (CNIGA), is preparing to send letters to popular app stores to alert them about the presence of unlicensed apps.

The issue of player-banker games like blackjack and baccarat being exclusive to cardrooms is a point of contention between tribes and cardrooms in California. This dispute over the legalization of social casinos in California has yet to provide specific names of the tribes involved.

In addition, social casinos have been under scrutiny from various circles in recent years. Numerous lawsuits have been filed against popular social casinos and providers of app stores like Apple and Google for allegedly profiting from unlicensed gambling.

As the debate continues, guests for upcoming webinars will include representatives from the American Gaming Association and the Sports Betting Alliance. Rocha aims to provide a platform for open discussion and potential solutions to this pressing issue.
