Call to Action: Let's take action now

In a shocking turn of events, Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, faced a devastating incident on a Wednesday in August 2025. The school year, which was themed "a future filled with hope" under the leadership of Principal Matthew DeBoer, was abruptly disrupted by a school shooting.

The shooting resulted in children crying and trying to protect one another, a sight that no school should ever have to witness. Unfortunately, Education Week reported that such incidents have become all too common, with more than two dozen school shootings occurring during the previous school year.

Principal DeBoer expressed a lack of hope following the tragic event, but urged the community to take action in addition to prayer. Archbishop Bernard Hebda, too, emphasized the importance of prayer and action, stating that they are the sources of hope.

Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota expressed dismay about the incident, stating that such incidents should not happen. Archbishop Hebda addressed reporters following the shooting, ringing the church bell as a call to prayer, and urging the community to come together in these difficult times.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Principal DeBoer confirmed that two students were killed. The school, the community, and the state are now left to pick up the pieces and find a way forward.

As the first school shooting of the new school year, this incident serves as a grim reminder of the need for action to prevent such tragedies from occurring. The community of Annunciation Catholic School, Minneapolis, and the nation as a whole must come together to find solutions and ensure a safer future for our children.
