Campaign Investigations Launched over 450 Election Campaign Breaches

In the lead-up to Latvia's upcoming elections, a series of spending reports have shed light on the financial aspects of the pre-election campaign.

The most significant spending was on outdoor advertising, amounting to nearly 900,000 euros. This was followed by spending on outdoor advertising, with around 500,000 euros spent on radio advertising, and approximately 300,000 euros on press advertising. Surprisingly, parties spent the least on online advertising.

The KNAB, Latvia's National Anti-Corruption Bureau, has been closely monitoring the campaign. Raituma, the KNAB representative, stated that parties have reported spending over €2 million in the limited pre-election campaign spending. He also pointed out that party materials circulation is not indicated in many cases, and that violations still exist in the pre-election campaign, despite being an old restriction.

Raituma described the number of investigations launched as 450, a figure that has doubled in the last month. He emphasized the importance of improving the regulatory framework for internet content during elections, and suggested that parties should be required to provide more detailed breakdowns of their expenses and declare contractual obligations before elections.

The party AfD has received the highest fines in recent weeks for violations of election advertising laws. These violations mainly involve illegal acceptance of donations and misuse of Bundestag funds, totaling 1.1 million euros over the last eight years. The maximum penalty for party violations of campaign restrictions is currently €7,000, but has been imposed at €2,000.

Only two parties have come close to the 60% threshold of the total campaign spending limit. This has raised questions about the effectiveness of the current spending limits, with the KNAB seeing problems with them, considering them too high.

The distribution of pre-election campaign materials is prohibited on Friday, 6 June, and election day, Saturday, 7 June. Raituma mentioned that 35 administrative proceedings have been initiated for pre-election campaign violations.

As the election day approaches, the KNAB continues to monitor the campaign closely, ensuring a fair and transparent election process for all parties involved.
