In the past 24 hours, a 70-year-old German driver found himself in hot water after damaging a parked Opel car in Greifswald's Makarenko Street. According to the Police Inspectorate Anklam, who provided the information via news aktuell, the driver left a note with their phone number on the damaged vehicle, but this practice is not permitted in Germany.
Leaving only a note in an accident does not comply with German law according to § 142 StGB. Furthermore, a note can easily blow away, get wet, or be overlooked, which could leave the victim without a responsible party for the damage. In this incident, the victim with the damaged vehicle would be left without knowing who to hold accountable.
The damage to the Opel car is estimated to be worth €2,000. However, there's a chance that the provided information in the note may be incorrect. Leaving incorrect information can further complicate matters, potentially causing more harm than good.
To ensure safety and report an accident properly, it's crucial to follow these steps: secure the accident site, provide first aid if necessary, call emergency services, exchange personal details and accident information with other involved parties, take photos and document the accident, and notify your insurance company about the accident within a week.
