Accident on A61 near Koblenz: 65-Year-Old Driver Causes Chaos in Rescue Lane
A traffic jam on the A61 towards Koblenz was interrupted by a shocking incident on Sunday afternoon. A 65-year-old driver, for unknown reasons, illegally used the emergency lane at high speed, causing an accident involving three vehicles and leaving five people injured.
The accident began when the driver collided with a Porsche that was being used by a 29-year-old man to form the rescue lane. The impact was severe, causing the Porsche to hit a small car. The two occupants of the Porsche, along with the driver and his 62-year-old passenger, sustained severe injuries. A woman in the small car was lightly injured.
The Autobahnpolizei Ruchheim reported that the rescue lane is frequently illegally used in accidents. The police are investigating why the 65-year-old driver drove through the rescue lane illegally and at high speed. It's worth noting that only police and emergency vehicles are allowed to use rescue lanes.
In such situations, drivers who do not form a rescue lane also risk fines. The fine for using a rescue lane illegitimately is 240 euros, two points, and a one-month driving ban. If property damage results, the fine is increased to 320 euros, with the same penalties.
The police spokesman stated that drivers often speed through rescue lanes to escape traffic jams. However, this action can lead to chain reactions, as in this case, where if one driver illegally uses the rescue lane, two or three more drivers may follow.
Following the accident, the A61 was temporarily completely closed in the direction of Koblenz. All injured parties were taken to nearby hospitals by ambulance. The estimated damage from the accident is around 65,000 euros. The 65-year-old driver, severely injured in the accident, could not yet be questioned by the police.
