Man Arrested After Driving Car into Russian Consulate in Sydney
A man was arrested on Monday morning after driving a car through the gates of the Russian consulate in Sydney. The incident, which occurred around 8am, resulted in a 24-year-old constable sustaining an injury to his hand.
According to initial reports, the suspicious vehicle was parked in the driveway of the consulate, with footage showing a white SUV with smashed windows near a flagpole. The driver, aged 39, allegedly drove his vehicle into the gates of the property.
Upon emerging from the consulate, Simeon Boikov, a pro-Kremlin influencer known as Aussie Cossack online, stated that he was awakened by police sirens around 8.30am. Upon investigation, he found a Toyota parked on the consulate's lawn. Simeon Boikov described the incident as a potential diplomatic asylum attempt.
The man is currently assisting police with their inquiries and was taken to Surry Hills Police Station for further investigation. Simeon Boikov added that the driver was already being pursued by police when he drove through the consulate's gates.
The Russian consulate in Sydney has been contacted for comment by AAP. The incident took place in the eastern suburbs of the city. The constable was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene.
Simeon Boikov, who has been residing at the Russian consulate for 1000 days, initially thought there was a fire next door due to the commotion caused by the incident. It is unclear at this stage whether the man had any connection to the consulate or any political motives for the incident.
The arrest has raised questions about security measures at the consulate and the potential for similar incidents in the future. The police are currently investigating the incident and are yet to release further details.
