Case Without an Owner Sparks Decarceration Investigation: Police of North Rhine-Westphalia Investigated by the Federal Department

On September 1st, an unattended hard-shell suitcase was discovered on the S1 train at Bochum Central Station, causing a significant disruption in operations. The train driver reported the suitcase around 5:05 PM, prompting a swift response from the Federal Police.

The head of the Bundespolizeidirektion St. Augustin, Barbara Heuser, oversaw the incident. Additional patrols were called in, and the Federal Police's Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit was requested to investigate.

Upon evaluation, the specialists decided to X-ray the suitcase. This led to the expansion of the cordon to include tracks 5, 6, and 7, as well as the pedestrian tunnel. The luggage was eventually handed over to the railway as a found item, but no owner came forward despite announcements at Bochum Central Station. As a result, the police evacuated the train and platform, and cordoned off the area.

The Federal Police is conducting an investigation to identify the owner of the suitcase. This includes reviewing video footage from the incident. If a person has left their luggage on a train or at a station, they are urged to notify the railway company immediately to avoid potential theft and associated costs.

The Federal Police appeals to travelers to avoid leaving their luggage unattended to prevent similar incidents.
