In the early hours of Monday morning, a tragic shooting incident took place outside the valet area of the Grand Sierra Resort casino in Reno, Nevada.

The gunman opened fire in the valet area and nearby parking lot, resulting in a rapid, multi-victim attack. According to reports, at least two people were fatally shot and at least three more were hospitalized[1][2].

Key details of the incident include:

  • The suspect's initial attempt to shoot innocent bystanders in the valet area was thwarted when his gun malfunctioned. However, he was able to fix it and fired multiple shots, hitting five people there[1][2].
  • One victim died on the scene, another died later at the hospital, and two remain in critical condition. One victim was released after treatment[1][2].
  • After shooting in the valet area, the suspect moved north through the parking lot and fired at a casino security guard who returned fire. Continuing through the lot, the suspect shot a sixth victim who was driving through; this person was also declared dead at the scene[1][2].
  • The suspect had multiple magazines and was found within minutes. He was taken into custody after an officer-involved shooting and was hospitalized[2][3].
  • Officials do not believe the gunman had any connection to the victims[2].

Authorities including Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance and Sparks Police Chief Chris Crawforth provided updates at a press conference, and the investigation is ongoing[1][2].

The Grand Sierra Resort, a large hotel and casino near Reno-Tahoe Airport, was the venue for President Donald Trump's campaign rally last fall[3]. The incident caused significant emergency response, and Reno officials expressed condolences while highlighting the challenge of gun violence[2][3].

Meanwhile, in other news, an Ontario family has filed a lawsuit against a hospital and its staff over their son's death, and a Montreal businessman is alleged to have run over a homeless woman[4][5].
