Catastrophic boat capsize in West Africa results in the death of at least 70 migrants, according to Gambia's announcement.
In a heart-wrenching incident, at least 70 migrants are feared dead after a vessel sank off the coast of Mauritania. The boat, believed to have departed from Gambia, was carrying mostly Gambian and Senegalese nationals.
According to estimates, the vessel was carrying over 150 passengers. Witness accounts suggest that more than 100 may have perished in the incident. Mauritanian authorities recovered 70 bodies on Wednesday and Thursday.
Sadly, this tragedy is not an isolated incident. In 2022, more than 10,000 people died attempting the Atlantic migration route from the coast of West Africa to the Canary Islands, marking a 58% increase over 2023. This route remains one of the world's deadliest.
Rescuers managed to save 16 passengers from the sinking vessel off Mauritania. However, the search results do not provide information about the captain of the boat or the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
The Atlantic migration route, fraught with danger, continues to be a desperate choice for many seeking a better life. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those lost at sea.
