Catastrophic Collapse of 200-foot Wall at Jaipur's Amer Fort during Heavy Rainfall; No Fatalities Reported
Collapse at Amer Fort: No Casualties, but Structural Damage
A section of the iconic Amer Fort in Jaipur, Rajasthan, collapsed on Saturday due to relentless rainfall. The collapse, which was captured on video, showed a large portion of the wall caving in, with torrents of water flowing through the collapsed structure.
The 200-foot-long section of the wall, located in front of the Jwala Mata Temple, is part of the Rambagh wall. Dr Rakesh Chholak, the Amer Palace Superintendent, confirmed the incident.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported. However, several parked vehicles were damaged, with some two-wheelers buried under the debris. As a precautionary measure, elephant rides at Amer Fort have been suspended until further notice.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely to ensure visitor safety and to prevent further damage. In response to the incident, they have implemented enhanced safety measures for visitors. These include restricting access to vulnerable areas, increasing structural inspections, and installing protective barriers to prevent similar incidents.
The collapse comes amid a spell of destructive monsoon weather that has caused damage across parts of India. Just days earlier, a roof at a dargah near Humayun's Tomb in Delhi caved in during heavy rain, tragically killing six people and injuring several others.
Amer Fort, also known as Amber Fort, is one of Rajasthan's most iconic landmarks. Located about 11 kilometres from Jaipur, it is a stunning example of Rajput and Mughal architectural fusion. Recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Hill Forts of Rajasthan" since 2013, Amer Fort attracts thousands of tourists every year.
The adjoining road and nearby structures have also been weakened by the collapse. Despite the setback, authorities remain committed to maintaining the safety and integrity of this historical gem.
