Catastrophic earthquake in Afghanistan leaves two young lives extinguished
In the heart of Afghanistan, an earthquake of significant magnitude was recently felt, causing concern and damage in various affected areas.
The earthquake, with a magnitude between 6 and 6.9 on the Richter scale, occurred near the Hindu Kush mountain range. The epicentre was located 42 kilometres from Jalalabad, the capital of the affected province.
This powerful quake, classified as strong and potentially destructive in an area of up to a hundred kilometers around the epicenter, has claimed the lives of two children in the province of Nangarhar. Tragically, the provinces of Nangarhar and Kunar are among the worst-affected areas, with lives lost.
Local authorities reported that 15 people were injured in the earthquake. Moreover, this week, the province of Nangarhar has also been hit by flash floods, which have claimed five lives and caused damage to agricultural land and residential areas.
The tremors were not limited to Afghanistan alone. Journalists from France-Presse (AFP) felt the earthquake in Kabul, while it was also felt in Islamabad, Pakistan, which is 370 kilometers away from the epicenter.
Afghanistan, particularly the regions near the Hindu Kush mountain range, is prone to earthquakes. This mountain range is situated at the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates, making the region seismically active.
Despite initial reports suggesting a magnitude of 2.5 on the Richter scale, it is important to clarify that the earthquake in question was of much greater magnitude. The earthquake that was felt on the island of Terceira was a separate event.
As the situation continues to unfold, our thoughts are with those affected by this natural disaster. The Afghan government and international aid organisations are working together to provide assistance to the affected communities.
