Record-Breaking Monsoon Rain Causes Chaos and Devastation in India
India is currently experiencing the devastating effects of climate change and poorly planned development, as the monsoon season brings an increase in the frequency, severity, and impact of floods and landslides.
The past week has seen torrential rainfall across various regions, breaking records at several locations. On Wednesday, two locations in the region recorded unprecedented rainfall: 296 millimeters (11.6 inches) in Jammu and a staggering 629.4 millimeters (24.8 inches) in Udhampur. This record-breaking rainfall has contributed to chaos and destruction, resulting in numerous fatalities and missing persons.
The tragic events have claimed at least 116 lives, with four children among the victims. On Wednesday, a landslide on the pilgrimage route to the Hindu shrine of Vaishno Devi in Jammu took the lives of 41 people. Another 33 people are still missing following the incident in Chisoti village. On Friday night, heavy rainfall and landslides in Ramban and Reasi districts resulted in an additional 11 deaths. Powerful torrents killed at least 65 people in Chisoti village in Indian-administered Kashmir on August 14.
The rainstorm since Tuesday has caused significant damage and disruption, affecting bridges, homes, and infrastructure in the affected regions. Floods on August 5 buried the Himalayan town of Dharali in India's Uttarakhand state, with a likely death toll of over 70, although this has not been confirmed. Bridges and homes in the region have been damaged due to the widespread chaos caused by the rainstorm.
The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), an organization focusing on the Himalayan mountain region and addressing the impacts of climate change and unplanned development there, has highlighted the urgent need for action to mitigate the effects of these natural disasters.
