Catastrophic twisters made landfall in four Massachusetts towns on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service's verification.
In a rare occurrence for the region, tornadoes were confirmed in New England on July 4, 2025, marking the first such event in the year. Parts of Worcester and Middlesex counties were under a tornado warning for nearly an hour on Saturday afternoon.
The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF1 tornado touched down in Holden, Massachusetts, at 4:07 p.m. The tornado was short-lived before lifting, but it left its mark on the picturesque town, located 55 miles west of Boston in Worcester County.
Homeowner Janna Goodnow expressed her concern about the uprooted trees, stating that they will change the landscape forever. Several large trees in yards along South Road in Holden were uprooted by the tornado. Don Jacobs, another resident, had to cancel the lawn reseeding due to the tornado damage.
The tornado in Holden was visible through the window, with leaves and branches spinning in a circle. Chris Quinn, a Holden resident, noted the lack of house damage given the density of trees, a testament to the resilience of the community.
The same storm cell produced EF1 tornadoes in Berlin and Stow as well, with the National Weather Service surveying storm damage in Berlin, Massachusetts, which is 16 miles east of Holden. The National Weather Service did not find evidence of a tornado in Otis and Blandford in western Massachusetts.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the tornadoes. EF1 tornadoes have winds in the range of 86 mph to 110 mph, and while they can cause significant damage, the lack of injuries is a relief for the community.
The tornadoes serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of weather and the importance of staying informed and prepared during severe weather events. Residents are encouraged to sign up for emergency alerts and to have a plan in place in case of severe weather.
