Catholic leader Pope Leo shares condolences with US bishops following the tragic loss of lives in a shooting at a Catholic school.

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a mass shooting took place at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis on August 27, 2021. The perpetrator, identified as Robin Westman, tragically took the lives of two young children, an 8-year-old and a 10-year-old, and injured 17 others, including 14 children and three adults in their 80s.

The shooting occurred during an all-school Mass at the adjacent Annunciation Catholic Church. The gunman shot from the outside of the church through windows, causing shock and horror within the community.

Archbishop Bernard A. Hebda of St. Paul and Minneapolis asked for continued prayers, expressing his sadness about the pain and anger in the communities due to the back-to-back shootings. He called for an end to gun violence and reminded the community of the need for God's love during this difficult time.

Archbishop Hebda was not alone in his sentiments. Los Angeles Archbishop José H. Gomez, Archbishop W. Shawn McKnight of Kansas City, Kansas, Bishop David M. O'Connell of Trenton, New Jersey, Bishop Mark Eckman of Pittsburgh, and Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore all expressed their condolences and prayers for those affected by the tragedy.

Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York and Pope Leo XIV also expressed their shock and sorrow over the mass shooting. They offered their prayers and condolences to the families of the victims and the entire Annunciation community.

In a message of hope, Archbishop O'Connell emphasized that the Body of Christ has been pierced by the mass shooting. He called for members to bind up the wounds, comfort the afflicted, and stand firm in faith. He reminded everyone that evil will not have the final word, and the light of Christ will shine through this darkness.

The shooting happened only a day after another shooting near Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in South Minneapolis, adding to the sense of unease and grief in the community. However, in the face of such adversity, the community has come together in prayer and support, demonstrating the resilience and unity that can arise from tragedy.

As the Annunciation community continues to mourn and heal, they are reminded that they are not alone. The prayers and support of the Catholic community, both locally and globally, serve as a testament to the power of unity in times of hardship. The light of Christ shines brightest in the darkest of times, and the Annunciation community will continue to find solace and strength in the love and support of their fellow believers.
