Celebration of Ancient Canine Elegance: Arabian Saluki Beauty Pageant Highlights UAE's Living Legacy
The Arabian Saluki Beauty Contest, an annual event organised by the Arabian Saluki Center, took place at the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX 2025) under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
This prestigious event saw 64 Salukis from across the UAE come together to compete in various categories, showcasing their unique coat types and gender. The Saluki breed, belonging to the sight hound family, is renowned for its speed, stamina, and keen hunting instincts.
The Saluki has a rich history in Bedouin culture, where harming one was considered a serious offense. These dogs played a crucial role in the lives of ancient Bedouins, helping with guarding possessions, controlling herds, and hunting. Over centuries, the Saluki became a symbol of nobility, grace, and endurance, and their reputation spread to royal households across the Middle East.
The Saluki is one of the world's oldest domesticated dog breeds, with roots dating back over 5,000 years in the Arabian Peninsula. They are known to be the fastest breed of dogs over long distances, capable of reaching speeds up to 75km/h.
The contest served as a celebration of the Saluki's cultural heritage. The Saluki Beauty Contest featured dogs of two types: Al Hess (smooth hounds) and Al Reesh (feathered ones). Judges at the contest assessed dogs based on gait, head structure, eyes, coat, and behaviour. They also evaluated physical attributes, hunting skills, and overall presentation.
The Salukis, treated as family members by the Bedouins, formed strong emotional bonds with their owners. This tradition continues today, as the contest aimed to celebrate the rich cultural heritage represented by the Saluki and preserve its traditional traits and exceptional qualities.
