Commemorating the Life and Legacy of Dr. Heinrich Jasper

Dr. Heinrich Jasper, a former Minister-President of the Free State of Brunswick, was remembered on his 150th birthday in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony organised by the state of Lower Saxony. The event took place on August 21, with Olaf Lies, the Lower Saxony Minister-President, and Dr. Thorsten Kornblum, the Mayor of Brunswick, among those in attendance.

Born and raised in Brunswick, Jasper attended the Wilhelm-Gymnasium before embarking on a political career. He served as Minister-President of the Free State of Brunswick on four separate occasions: 1919/20, 1922-1924, 1927-1929, and 1930.

Jasper was a committed democrat and fiercely resisted National Socialism. His political stance led to his persecution and eventual murder by the National Socialists (Nazis) in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where he perished on February 19, 1945.

The wreath-laying ceremony took place at the Dr. Heinrich Jasper Memorial, Fritz-Bauer-Platz. Following the ceremony, a festive event was held in the Dornse in the Old Town Hall, where attendees gathered to honour Jasper's life and legacy.

Jasper's commitment to democracy and resistance against the Nazi regime serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of standing up for one's beliefs, even in the face of adversity. His legacy continues to inspire those who strive for a more just and democratic society.
