Celebratory night in Kolkata turns tragic with an unfortunate woman being gang-raped.
In a series of disturbing incidents, the city of Kolkata, once considered one of the safest for women in India, has seen a recent surge in crimes against women.
Last Saturday, an FIR was lodged at Haridevpur Police Station under relevant sections of the law, following a gang-rape that occurred at Deep's flat in Kolkata's Regent Park area. The victim, a 20-year-old woman, was celebrating her birthday when she was allegedly gang-raped by two acquaintances, Chandan Malik and a man known as Deep.
The investigation into this heinous crime is ongoing, with police teams deployed to trace the absconding accused. The two men, who are currently at large, have not had their exact locations publicly disclosed. Chandan Malik is reportedly the head of a prominent Durga Puja committee.
Deep, according to reports, is a government employee. This incident comes after a law student was allegedly raped on the South Calcutta Law College campus on June 25, with alumnus Monojit Mishra as the prime suspect. Mishra, a former Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) unit president, was later arrested.
Women's rights activists argue that these recurring incidents indicate systemic failures in addressing crimes against women. Last year, a trainee doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, leading to nationwide outrage. The accused, Sanjay Roy, a former civic police volunteer, was sentenced to life imprisonment earlier this year.
The city of Udaipur in India has also seen a similar case, with a French tourist being raped after a cafe party. The accused in this case are still at large.
As the city grapples with these disturbing incidents, it is crucial that the authorities take swift and decisive action to ensure the safety and security of its citizens, particularly women.
