Cerritos girls volleyball struggles against Whitney, league leader in 605 League, eventually losing in a hard-fought five-set match

In the ongoing high school sports season, several local teams faced off in league matches this week, with some impressive performances and close matches.

In football, Compton Early College has had a tough season, with a 4-1 record and a scoreline of 297-65 this season. The team has allowed at least 70 points in consecutive games, a challenging hurdle they are yet to overcome. Meanwhile, Capistrano Valley Christian High is currently 3-2 and will play Valley Christian High in Ironwood League action. Capistrano Valley Christian has shown some offensive prowess, scoring 34 points twice and 38 in another game this season.

In the Mid-Cities League opener, Norwalk High will face Compton Early College. Norwalk High's rushing attack has been strong this season, gaining 2,137 yards and scoring 25 touchdowns. La Mirada High, on the other hand, has four running backs with at least 144 yards. Jordan Lauago leads the team with 379 yards and seven touchdowns.

In girls' volleyball, Whitney High secured the 605 League title for the first time since 2000, defeating Cerritos High in a five-set match. Sophia Fu had a pair of aces for Whitney High in the fifth set. Artesia High, meanwhile, has won two straight games in girls volleyball.

Downey High, led by quarterback Oscar Rios, suffered a loss to Red Mountain High out of Mesa, AZ, with a score of 35-32 on Sept. 20. Rios has passed for 1,543 yards and 12 touchdowns and rushed for 448 yards with seven more touchdowns. Bernardo Blanco is the leading rusher for Downey High with 442 yards on 71 carries and eight touchdowns.

La Mirada High's quarterback Santino Garcia has passed for nearly 900 yards and three touchdowns but has thrown seven interceptions. Damani Porras is Rios' favorite target with 31 receptions for 598 yards and nine touchdowns.

Cerritos High, despite losing to Whitney High, still has a chance to finish the regular season in second place. The team had a strong start in the fifth set, leading 5-0, 8-3, and 9-5, but ultimately lost the match. Cerritos High also had eight seniors who played their last regular season match at home.

Valley Christian has been a force to reckon with, scoring at least 28 points in four of the five games and posting 14 sacks. All Austin Abrahams of Valley Christian has done this season is score touchdowns, with 1,030 yards passing, nine touchdowns rushing, 12 receptions for 354 yards and seven touchdowns receiving. Joshua Monroe of Capistrano Valley Christian has gained 631 yards and scored eight touchdowns. Three players on Capistrano Valley Christian's defense have combined for 13 sacks, and the team has picked off opposing quarterbacks eight times.

Looking ahead, Whitney High hosts John Glenn High on Tuesday, while Norwalk High prepares to face Compton Early College. Let's see how these teams fare in their upcoming matches!
