Heidenoldendorf Primary School Achieves Fairtrade Certification

Heidenoldendorf Primary School in Detmold has made history as the only public secondary school in the city to receive the prestigious Fairtrade certification. The school's long-standing commitment to fair trade and sustainable practices has been recognised by Fairtrade Germany, marking a significant achievement in terms of sustainability and global responsibility.

The certification ceremony took place in Detmold, with principal Katrin Freitag expressing pride in the school's commitment, creativity, and unity. Teacher Franziska Altmann, who initiated and led the project, emphasised in her speech that Fairtrade means responsibility for a fairer world, sustainable action, and conscious consumption.

The school community played a significant role in achieving the Fairtrade certification. Students, staff, and various local groups, including the Fairtrade Detmold steering group, representatives of the city portal, and Michael Duchting of Fairtrade Schools Germany, all contributed to this milestone.

The Fairtrade certification serves as recognition and motivation to continue anchoring sustainability in daily school life. As part of the ceremony, a clothing swap event was held, emphasising environmental protection and social responsibility. Fair-trade products were also offered at various food stands, promoting sustainable consumption.

The school's success in achieving the Fairtrade certification is not limited to the ceremonial presentation. Every day, the school practices its commitment to fair trade and sustainable practices. The only public elementary school in Detmold currently holding the Fairtrade certificate is the Grundschule Lohfeld.

The Fairtrade certification sets a strong example of global responsibility and solidarity in education. It also highlights the school's goal to strengthen awareness of global interconnections among young people by firmly anchoring sustainability in daily school life.

The Fairtrade Football Cup, focusing on fair play and conscious resource use, was also part of the school's ceremony framework program. This event further underscores the school's dedication to promoting fair trade and sustainable practices in all aspects of school life.

Mayor Wolfgang Schriegel and other dignitaries were present to congratulate the school on its achievement. Katrin Freitag thanked everyone involved, expressing her gratitude for their hard work and dedication. The Fairtrade certification is a testament to the school's commitment to creating a better, fairer world, one step at a time.
