Budget limitations may lead Charité to decrease the number of study positions available in the upcoming period. Potential staff reductions are also a possibility due to these financial adjustments.

Charité warns of potential elimination of 200 academic positions

The Charité, one of Europe's largest university hospitals, is facing a challenging period as it grapples with staff and study place reductions. The reductions are a direct result of an insufficient subsidy increase from the science administration.

According to the Charité's Dean, Joachim Spranger, the personnel being reduced is essential for training doctors, dentists, nurses, midwives, and health scientists. The hospital may need to reduce its teaching staff by 10-14% (approximately 200 positions).

This decision, however, does not pose a threat to enrolled students. All enrolled students will be guaranteed a degree, as confirmed by the Charité Dean.

The reduction in study places is also a part of the cost-cutting measures. The Charité will reduce study places in human medicine by 60 per year, dentistry by 20, midwifery by 30, and health sciences by 14.

The insufficient subsidy increase does not cover wage increases and inflation, which is also affecting the study place reductions. The original contracts signed in 2024 promised an annual increase of 5%, but the Charité now expects an increase of between 1-3%.

This situation is not unique to the Charité. Universities in total are expected to absorb cuts of around 140 million euros this year. The decision on the reduced study places is pending approval from the senate and the House of Representatives.

The search results do not specify the name of the politician or political party responsible for bringing the amended university contracts to a vote before the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Despite these challenges, the Charité remains committed to its mission of providing high-quality healthcare and training the next generation of healthcare professionals.
