In a surprising turn of events, ChatGPT, the popular AI-powered chat model, has experienced an outage that has left thousands of users globally unable to access the service. The California-based AI company, OpenAI, is currently investigating the root cause of the issue.

Hundreds of users have filed reports on Downdetector in the last hour, with a significant number of affected users in India, where over 499 reports have been recorded. The outage peaked in the United States with over 2,600 reports, according to Downdetector data.

The outage has caused inconvenience for many users who rely on ChatGPT for day-to-day tasks. A shared prompt error seems to be the culprit, preventing users from accessing the service. Despite the outage, OpenAI remains committed to addressing the issue and restoring service as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, OpenAI has made a significant move towards addressing concerns about the impact of AI on teenagers' mental health. On Tuesday, the company published a blog post announcing the rollout of parental controls for ChatGPT. With these controls, parents will be able to link their ChatGPT accounts with those of their children, enabling them to disable certain features such as memory and chat history.

Parents will also be notified when their teen shows signs of distress, and control over the chatbot's responses will be based on "age-appropriate model behavior rules." This move comes amid ongoing controversy over the impact of artificial intelligence on teenagers' mental health.

Himani Jha, a tech news writer at the platform, has covered the development extensively. With a passion for smartphones and consumer technology, Himani has contributed to leading publications such as Times Network, Gadgets 360, and Hindustan Times Tech for the past five years.

While the ChatGPT outage has undoubtedly caused frustration among users, with many taking to X (formerly Twitter) to express their concerns and share funny jibes, the introduction of parental controls marks a step forward in ensuring the safe and responsible use of AI. OpenAI's commitment to addressing the root cause of the outage and restoring service is commendable, and users eagerly await a resolution.
