Chef restaurant acquisition by Funke from RTL Germany finalized
In a significant move, Funke Medien National Brands is set to acquire Chefkoch, a leading food portal based in Bonn, Germany. This acquisition is expected to lead Chefkoch into a promising future, enhancing Funke's target audiences with the addition of Chefkoch's user base of over 20 million unique users per month.
Funke, known for its portfolio of cooking magazines such as "So schmeckt" and "Bild der Frau Gut kochen & backen", sees the acquisition as a strategic fit given its existing portfolio. The acquisition is also perceived as a key growth area for Funke's food expertise.
With approximately 100 employees joining Funke, the acquisition is expected to benefit Chefkoch's employees as they will have the opportunity to work with Funke's digital expertise. Christine Nieland will continue as managing director of Chefkoch after the acquisition.
In addition to Chefkoch, Funke will also acquire kochbar.de, a portal previously powered by Vox.de. Chefkoch GmbH will remain the operator of the digital offering essen-und-trinken.de.
Stephan Schmitter, CEO of RTL Deutschland, has publicly commented on the sale, expressing satisfaction that Funke, with its strong digital expertise and food competence, is a suitable buyer to develop the brand further and ensure a good future together with the employee team. Schmitter also states that Funke can lead Chefkoch into a good future with its employees.
Jesper Doub, Managing Director of Funke Medien National Brands, believes the integration of Chefkoch will elevate their food offerings to a new level. Jochen Beckmann, also Managing Director of Funke Medien National Brands, views Funke as the "docking point for another 'love brand'" for both users and advertisers.
With over 360,000 recipes available on the Chefkoch website, the acquisition underscores Funke's commitment to providing high-quality food content to its audiences. As Funke continues to grow and evolve, the acquisition of Chefkoch marks an exciting step forward in its journey.
