Chelsea faces potential loss of Nkunku to Leipzig, as Milan successfully thwarts Bayern's pursuit for the player.
Chelsea's Nkunku Joins AC Milan in Major Transfer
Christopher Nkunku has made a shock move from Chelsea to AC Milan on a five-year deal, the Italian club announced on Saturday. The 27-year-old French international will join Milan's squad for the upcoming season, marking a significant move for the club.
Nkunku struggled to make a significant impact after joining Chelsea from RB Leipzig in 2023, managing only 18 goals in 62 appearances for the English club. Despite his limited success at Stamford Bridge, Nkunku's departure may indicate further changes at the club.
The transfer fee for Nkunku is reported to be up to €42m (£36.2m), making him one of AC Milan's most expensive signings. AC Milan have also agreed to a sell-on clause in the Nkunku transfer, ensuring they will benefit financially if the Frenchman goes on to have a successful career at the San Siro.
Nkunku chose AC Milan over Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, snubbing the German giants for the opportunity to play in the Serie A. His signing comes after Milan's first win of the Serie A campaign against Lecce, and he is set to bolster the club's attacking options.
AC Milan have been active in the transfer market this summer, with Nkunku being their eighth signing of the window. The club has also secured the services of Luka Modric, Samuele Ricci, Ardon Jashari, Pervis Estupinan, Koni De Winter, Zachary Athekame, and Pietro Terracciano.
Meanwhile, there are growing reports of a loan deal for Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich. The next player likely to leave Stamford Bridge is Jackson, who has already agreed to join Bayern Munich on loan for the 2025/26 season. The loan fee is reported to be around €16.5 million, with a conditional obligation to make the transfer permanent for over £56 million after the loan period.
Nkunku's signing comes at a time when AC Milan are looking to strengthen their squad after a disappointing 2022/23 season. The club finished seventh in Serie A last season and failed to qualify for Europe. With the addition of Nkunku and the other signings, AC Milan will be hoping to challenge for a top-four finish in the upcoming season.
