Chic French restaurant opens up in an Upper East Side townhouse
New York's Intimate 1930s Parisian Retreat, Chez Fifi, Opens on the Upper East Side
Chez Fifi, a new two-floor destination that transports guests to the elegance of 1930s Paris, has opened its doors on the corner of 74th Street and Lexington Avenue in Manhattan's Upper East Side. The restaurant, a venture by brothers Joshua and David Foulquier, celebrates their French heritage, particularly their mother, Fifi.
The interior design, by Stockholm-based Joyn Studio, features a blend of rich mahogany panelling, rows of bevel-edged mirrors, eclectic artworks, and a touch of Scandinavian sensibility. The bar area boasts bookmatched stone with rippled marbling, reminiscent of the Loos American Bar in Vienna. The lounge has a curve-cornered ceiling traced with criss-crossed molding details, army green walls, and a monolithic black marble fireplace.
The ground-floor dining room, dominated by mahogany, contrasts with navy upholstery and a Payne's gray ceiling. Booth seating is enclosed by patterned curtains, and a row of two-tops follows a red banquette along one side. Thin vertical mirrored strips are present above the seats and along the stairway leading upstairs.
The upper-floor salon is divided into a compact bar area and a cosy lounge space. The upper-floor is designed for enjoying martinis and French-inspired cocktails. The design includes touches like ceiling-mounted glassware and bottle racks, double-head sconces with fabric shades, columns and counters with zig-zag profiles, and a sign designed to mimic Parisian streets.
The menu at Chez Fifi offers a combination of classic French dishes and favorites from San Sebastián. Examples of dishes on the menu include foie gras terrine, jamón Iberico, frogs' legs, Basque deviled crab, filet mignon au poivre, and wild Dover sole.
Since its opening in December 2024, Chez Fifi has been almost impossible to secure a reservation. The website for Chez Fifi is chezfifinyc.com. Helena Eliason, who co-founded Joyn Studio with partners Lisa Grape and Ida Wanler, stated that this project perfectly encapsulates their philosophy of creating spaces that put people in the right mood through a deep understanding of culture, behavior, and sensory elements.
The names of the two brothers who opened the restaurant are Pierre and Louis Martin. The design of Chez Fifi includes additional elements such as the use of double-head sconces with fabric shades, columns and counters with zig-zag profiles, and a sign designed to mimic Parisian streets.
For those seeking a taste of 1930s Paris in the heart of New York, Chez Fifi is a must-visit destination.
