Children take a ride in Berlin, accompanied by the driver; he's subsequently apprehended by authorities.
In Berlin-Wedding, a distressing incident occurred at the intersection of Dohnagestell and Seestraße around 12:50 PM. The accident involved a group of children aged 7 to 8 from Moabit, who were on a leisure activity at the time.
According to the police spokesman, Florian Nath, the driver's peculiar behavior and the course of events have increased suspicion of drug or alcohol use. The driver was taken to a hospital under police guard, and blood and urine samples will be taken to confirm this suspicion.
The driver has been provisionally arrested and, if found guilty, will be investigated for reckless bodily harm. Nath spoke of "recklessness" regarding the accident, expressing concern over the potential danger posed to the children.
Sadly, a supervisor was severely injured in the accident. Thankfully, it appears that the children suffered only minor injuries. Some pedestrians saw the car coming and managed to jump aside, avoiding a more tragic outcome.
More than 40 people were at the scene of the accident, and a team of emergency chaplains and crisis interventionists supported the children and parents who rushed to the scene.
There is no evidence of a terrorist motive or a rampage in this case. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, but suspicion that the driver was under the influence of "intoxicating substances" remains.
The driver's driver's license, if they possess one, has been confiscated. The man is expected to be released once samples are taken and his identity is clarified. Further charges could be added as the investigation continues.
A total of 19 people were treated at the scene by rescue workers, according to a spokesman. The children who were not injured were taken back to their facility by their supervisors.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety, especially when children are involved. Our thoughts are with those affected by this accident.
