Chilly start to May 9 in Latvia's weather
On a surprising turn of events, several regions in Latvia experienced an unprecedented cold snap on May 9, 2023. This chilly weather broke previous records set in the same day, both in 2023 and way back in 1999.
The coldest temperatures on this particular day were recorded in Madona, Zosēni, Rēzekne, and Dagda. In Madona and Zosēni, the mercury dropped to a chilly -5.5°C, while Rēzekne and Dagda recorded -5.1°C. These temperatures set new all-month records for both locations, as never before has May witnessed such low temperatures.
In Rēzekne and Dagda, the temperatures on May 9, 2023, surpassed the records set in 1999, when Zosēni recorded an astonishing -6.5°C. However, it's important to note that the national May 9 cold record remains unbeaten, set in Zosēni back in 1999.
Interestingly, the cold records for May 9 were not only set in 2023, but also in 1999. The frost has since passed in most of Kurzeme, the extreme west of Zemgale, and Vidzeme.
As for the future, temperatures during the weekend and early next week in Latvia are expected to approach zero at night. However, there are no more frosts predicted for the next night, providing a glimmer of hope for a warmer spell.
It's a fascinating reminder that Latvia's weather can be as unpredictable as its beautiful landscapes, and we eagerly await the return of spring's warmth.
