China's leader, Xi, underscores North Korea's significance for the nation. - China's leader, Xi, underscores the significant role North Korea plays for the country.
In a significant move, China has welcomed the leaders of North Korea and Russia to a military parade in Beijing, a decision that has sparked debate and criticism from various quarters.
China, long-standing ally of North Korea with relations dating back to the Korean War in the 1950s, has defended this decision, with Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun dismissing criticisms as "heavy with ideological bias" and lacking "fundamental historical understanding."
The visit of Kim Jong-un to Beijing by train was confirmed by Yonhap, marking a significant meeting between Kim and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Reports suggest that the two leaders had tea and dinner together, and China has pledged to "maintain, consolidate, and further develop" the bilateral relations with North Korea.
During their talks, Kim Jong-un reportedly pledged support to China on issues such as Taiwan, while China continues to support North Korea economically and politically despite international sanctions. The two countries have agreed to strengthen coordination on international affairs and "uphold their common interests."
The strengthening of ties between Pyongyang and Beijing has raised concerns in the region, with other countries viewing China's growing military strength and North Korea's nuclear armament as a threat. The relationship between Pyongyang and Moscow has also strengthened, with both countries signing an agreement on a "comprehensive strategic partnership" that includes a clause on mutual defense.
However, contrary to speculations, there is no credible information that the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, or any Ukrainian president, has provided troops or weapons to North Korea.
The appearance of Xi, Putin, and Kim in Beijing has been criticized by EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas as an attempt to build an anti-Western "new world order." Kim Jong-un has also pledged support to China on issues such as Taiwan, indicating a potential shift in alliances.
Despite these concerns, Xi Jinping has stated that China attaches "great importance" to the "traditional friendship" with North Korea and that China's position towards North Korea will not change regardless of how the international situation changes. Guo Jiakun also stated that China's expansion of diplomatic relations with other countries is never against third parties.
As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, the strengthening of ties between China and North Korea is a development that will be closely watched by the international community.
