In a inspiring move, WNBA star Chiney Ogwumike has chosen Nigeria as the location for the first Queens of the Continent (QOTC) camp on African soil. The three-day event, taking place from August 29 to 31, 2023, aims to empower young women and girls, both on and off the court.

Ogwumike, who is also the first female Ambassador of the Basketball Africa League (BAL), sees QOTC as a bridge between Africa and the diaspora. The camp, organised by Ogwumike and her QOTC Foundation, is a landmark moment for women's basketball and youth empowerment in Nigeria.

The camp includes a variety of programming, combining basketball, mentorship, networking, and leadership development. There will be an exclusive networking event, a BAL4Her U23 camp, and a clinic for 60 under-16 girls. Ogwumike's vision is to build future champions and future leaders.

This initiative is close to Ogwumike's heart, as she wishes she had received advice to stand authentically in her own truth and be proud of who she is. She hopes that the camp will help young women build confidence and see the various ways they can be involved in sports beyond just playing.

The QOTC Foundation's partnership with BAL4Her marks the foundation's first activation on the African continent. This collaboration is a testament to Ogwumike's dedication to building sustainable growth for women in basketball and sports in general.

Ogwumike's efforts extend beyond the court. She refurbished courts at Queens College in Lagos, her mother's alma mater, and sees her dual role with QOTC and BAL4Her as a means to empower girls and extend their opportunities far beyond the game.

In 2023, QOTC collaborated with the Houston Rockets for Nigerian Night. Ogwumike defines success as seeing participants from camps like this go on to represent national teams, play in the WNBA, or compete in elite leagues abroad. The QOTC camp in Lagos is already making its mark and is only the beginning for Ogwumike.
