In the heart of Talisay City, Philippines, a unique tradition has found a new home. Caven Pineda, a native of Pampanga, the "Christmas Capital of the Philippines," brought the age-old Capiz lantern trade to the city, offering a beacon of hope during the challenging times of the pandemic.

Pineda's venture, Kamri Pampanga's Capiz Lantern, is now a familiar sight at the corner of Rabaya Street and South Coastal Road. Here, Capiz lanterns, those intricate and beautiful symbols of Filipino Christmas spirit, are displayed for sale.

Pineda, who once worked overseas, now collaborates with skilled craftsmen, including 72-year-old Roly Gabilan. Gabilan serves as both the designer and installer of the Capiz panels for the lanterns, his deft hands weaving the delicate shells sourced from the Negros Island Region.

The Capiz lanterns, priced from P1,000 for 13-inch pieces to P15,000 for 40-inch creations, have become more than just decorations. People began buying them not only to brighten their homes but also as symbols of hope and brightness during uncertain times.

This sourcing tradition supports both artistry and local livelihoods, a testament to the resilience of the Filipino spirit. As the Ber months begin, encouraging more Filipinos to fill their homes and communities with Christmas decorations, the Capiz lanterns stand as a reminder of the country's unique ways of welcoming the holidays with light, hope, and joy.

The month of September marks the beginning of the world's longest Christmas season in the Philippines. Parols and other Christmas decorations, like the Capiz lanterns, are uniquely Filipino ways of celebrating the holidays, a tradition that Pineda learned from his family in Pampanga, who have long been in the Capiz lantern business.

As we navigate through these challenging times, the Capiz lanterns of Talisay City serve as a shining example of the power of artistry, community, and hope. They are more than just lanterns; they are a beacon of light in the darkest of times.
