Chrome Music Lab Educational Suggestions for Roblox: Cultivating a Music-Based Garden within the Game

In the ever-evolving world of education, integrating technology into teaching can sometimes feel like a daunting task, especially in the realm of music. However, the Midnight Music Community is here to help, offering a platform designed for teachers of all skill levels. This community aims to make technology integration into music teaching stress-free and accessible.

One of the resources provided by the Midnight Music Community is Grow A Garden, an engaging Roblox game that seamlessly blends music learning with the joy of gaming. The game features well-known classical pieces that shape the mood of the game, providing students with informal exposure to famous works. Eight such pieces include Grieg's Morning Mood, Vivaldi's Spring from the Four Seasons, Mozart's Rondo Alla Turka, Debussy's Clair de Lune, Satie's Gymnopédie No.1, Haydn's Trumpet Concerto in E flat major, Brahms' Hungarian Dance Number 5, and Beethoven's Ode To Joy from Symphony No.9.

A YouTube playlist containing these pieces, plus a few others, has been curated by Roblox gamer PatriceX2, offering students a chance to listen to the original performances. In the classroom, students can first listen to these audio recordings or the provided Teacher (complete) versions, then add the missing notes in the provided Song Maker template. This activity is quick, fun, and serves as a great entry point for those new to using Chrome Music Lab in music class.

For a more advanced challenge, there's a variation on the missing notes Chrome Music Lab Song lesson activity. In this version, the notes are all there but some are wrong. Students must work out where the mistakes are and correct them, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

The Song Maker versions include harmony parts and bass lines, allowing students to explore these elements and create their own versions of the pieces. Optional extension ideas include choosing a different playback sound, changing the tempo, adding a drum part, and adding bass line notes or harmony notes that fit with the melody.

Students can further engage with these melodies by playing them on various instruments, such as Boomwhackers, recorders, glockenspiels, xylophones, metallophones, or band and orchestra instruments. The Chrome Music Lab Piano Roll can also be used for sound exploration, where students can record their own sounds and play them back.

The Midnight Music Community is more than just a platform; it's a go-to hub for tech-focused professional development. Featuring step-by-step training, world-class online courses, bite-sized learning through digital badges, and creative lesson ideas, it's a valuable resource for any music teacher.
