Church Disdain from Director Stückl: "I despise the church"
In an interview with the Augsburger Allgemeinen (Saturday edition), Christian Stückl, the renowned director of the Passion Play in Oberammergau, has expressed his intentions to make the centuries-old production more appealing to a younger generation.
Stückl, who has staged the Passion Play, which occurs every ten years, four times, is currently focused on finding a new director to continue his legacy. However, he emphasises that the successor must be from the town of Oberammergau.
The Passion Play, with its deep roots in religious history, has faced criticism for its association with anti-Semitic events in the past. Stückl, who has been praised for his efforts against anti-Semitism in the production, is now more likely to be attacked for his work in this area. Critics have even labelled him a "Jew-lover."
Despite this, Stückl remains undeterred. He is seeking a successor who shares his vision of making the Passion Play more engaging for a younger audience, without resorting to didactic storytelling.
Stückl has also expressed his disapproval of the church, stating it is neither socially nor morally a role model. Yet, he has lost interest in the church and no longer cares about the criticism it may bring.
As the search for a successor continues, Stückl is open to the possibility of taking someone from outside the town if no suitable candidate is found. However, he is hopeful that someone from Oberammergau will step forward to carry on the tradition.
Stückl will take on the role of the Passion Play director again in 2030, but until then, he will continue to think about new ways to present the story of the Passion Play, ensuring its relevance for future generations.
