City authorities in Dresden advocate for lifting the financial restrictions
In the city of Dresden, the Greens and the SPD faction have called for further financial details at the upcoming finance committee meeting on Monday. The meeting will provide an opportunity for both parties to ask specific questions about the city's budget, following recent announcements that predict a balanced budget for 2023 with a smaller deficit than initially anticipated.
The current financial report now predicts a small deficit of 2.3 million euros, a significant decrease from the initial expected budget gap of 57.8 million euros. This reduction has led Dana Frohwieser, the leader of the SPD faction in the Dresden city council, to claim that the announced budget deficit of around 50 million euros has disappeared.
However, it's important to note that neither the Greens nor the SPD have yet declared their stance on potential cuts in schools, social infrastructure, youth work, and sports clubs. Dana Frohwieser has criticised Dirk Hilbert, the Lord Mayor and Finance Mayor of Dresden, for wanting to make cuts in these areas, while the SPD faction in the city council has demanded the immediate lifting of the budget freeze.
The Greens, represented by finance spokesman Torsten Hans in the Dresden city council, have also called for the lifting of the budget freeze, but they have not yet claimed that the budget deficit has disappeared or criticised Dirk Hilbert or the SPD faction for their stance.
Dirk Hilbert lifted the budget freeze late in 2022, citing the need to maintain fiscal discipline and ensure financial stability, despite facing criticism from both the SPD and the Greens who found the timing unclear. The Greens expect further financial figures for individual areas to be available at the next finance committee meeting.
As the city of Dresden moves forward with its budget planning, the Greens and the SPD will be seeking clarity on the financial situation and the potential impact on crucial areas such as education, social infrastructure, youth services, and sports clubs. The upcoming finance committee meeting promises to provide valuable insights into the city's financial future.
