City Council Decision from Neustadt
In a series of meetings, Dresden's city district councilors have been busy making decisions that will shape the city's future.
A proposal to expand Königsbrücker Street, initially made nine years ago, has been revisited. Philipp Grimm (Left) supports the application, stating that the expansion in the existing infrastructure was never tested. However, the councilors unanimously voted against it, with Sascha Mölckel (Greens) finding it difficult to justify almost 100 million euros being invested in the expansion, suggesting that the street could just stay as it is.
On a more positive note, the city district councilors voted in favour of a grant of 2,700 euros for the Films Beyond the Horizon festival, scheduled to take place in the Hecht Garden from October 30 to November 9, 2025. The event will feature 15 film evenings with international short films and local food, and a highlight is the family weekend with African music, food, and interactive activities. If successful, the day will be held annually.
The Small Reading Series at Drinnen & Draußen will also grace Dresden's streets, with four readings planned for Kamenzer Street in autumn 2025, aimed at adults aged 30 and over from Dresden's Neustadt.
Hanna Ogrzewalla (Greens) pointed out that there is a report stating that the trees cannot be preserved in case of a "renovation of the existing infrastructure" as they stand over the sewer pipes that need to be renewed. Felix Gohler (SPD) echoed this concern, stating that trees above Königsbrücker would have to be felled in such a scenario. In response, the councilors voted in favour of examining whether one or more additional waste containers can be installed at the corner of Rudolfstraße/Ottostraße, aiming to reduce the negative effects on the city climate due to the loss of trees.
The city district councilors also showed their commitment to strengthening neighbourhood cohesion and a sense of responsibility. The project "StoP - Neighborhoods without Domestic Violence" was presented at the District Council meeting on September 1, 2025. The goal of the project is to raise awareness about domestic violence through information and awareness-raising work. The association is applying for a grant of 2,250 euros, and funding of 3,100 euros has been applied for to pay fair fees.
An information event on the expansion of Königsbrücker Street is planned at the "Campus Cordis" comprehensive school on September 23, registration is required. Councilor Martin Schulte-Wissermann (Pirates) proposed to renovate the existing street section of Königsbrücker Straße instead of expanding it. Tina Siebeneicher (Greens) stated that the variant was a compromise variant at the time.
A significant decision was made regarding the restoration of the sculpture by sculptor Sebastian Hempel. The cost of restoring the sculpture is 35,694.05 euros, and the city district councilors voted in favour of supporting its production and erection on the main street. The artist who created the copy of the Baroque sculpture "Sculpture" in the Main Street district is Berthold Hölzel.
Finally, on October 1, 2025, an action day for older and aging people will take place, running from 2 pm to 5 pm on the square in front of the barn and in the event room of the Blechschloss.
These decisions and events reflect the councilors' dedication to maintaining and improving Dresden's infrastructure, promoting arts and culture, and addressing important social issues.
