City of Arnsberg acquires land for a shared industrial zone involving multiple municipalities
In a significant step towards enhancing their local economies, the cities of Arnsberg and Meschede have made progress in developing an intermunicipal industrial zone. The 17th regional planning amendment procedure for the development of the intermunicipal industrial zone Arnsberg/Meschede was issued by the state government in 2022.
The cities aim to address the shortage of commercial plots and preserve undeveloped land by developing future-oriented and attractive companies and jobs within the framework of sustainable industrial area development. To this end, Arnsberg has purchased a 6.1-hectare plot in Wildshausen from the "Land NRW Property Fund". This central plot, previously used industrially, has been secured, providing a solid foundation for the project's development.
The city's mayor, Ralf Paul Bittner, stated that the location is ideally suited for further strengthening the local and regional economy. The purchase was made with the intention of developing an intermunicipal industrial area with the city of Meschede.
Meschede's Mayor, Christoph Weber, is optimistic about the potential of the inter-municipal industrial estate for high supra-regional appeal. The development of industrial sites, with the support of the EFRE project, is expected to lead to long-term increasing tax revenues and local jobs, ensuring the attractiveness of the cities of Arnsberg and Meschede as future residential locations.
The EFRE project "Sustainable Industrial Sites in South Westphalia" may support innovative concepts regarding future mobility, climate-appropriate construction of industrial operations, and sustainable energy supply concepts. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia has enabled and regulated the public initial purchase, remediation of contaminated sites, and development of infrastructure for structurally important locations through the "Land Acquisition Fund NRW".
The next step for the partner cities is to work out a public-law contract to securely agree on the key pillars of intermunicipal cooperation. The traffic connections of the existing industrial areas "Gewerbeterassen Wildshausen" and "Gewerbegebiet Brumlingsen" can be improved as a new access road is planned to connect the entire area directly to the federal highway (BAB) 46.
The regional government has prepared for the development of this intermunicipal industrial area through its 17th regional plan amendment in 2023. The existing industrial estates in Arnsberg and Meschede are expected to grow together into a strong location, offering high-quality industrial and commercial areas in an attractive environment. This is the first time that Arnsberg is participating in the development of an intermunicipal industrial area.
The intermunicipal industrial area approach is of great importance due to the shortage of commercial plots in both cities. The development is expected to create a vibrant, sustainable, and economically robust region, fostering growth and opportunities for all its residents.
