City of Braunschweig progresses with speedy internet services
The city of Brunswick is embarking on an ambitious project to expand its telecommunications infrastructure, with a particular focus on the private sector. The ongoing fiber optic expansion aims to improve connectivity in under-served areas, where download bandwidth is less than 30 Mbit/s.
This expansion offers several advantages over traditional copper cables, as fiber optic cables enable significantly higher transmission rates, operating at the speed of light. The city and Telekom Deutschland GmbH are working closely to ensure that construction work, expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2026, is carried out professionally and with minimal inconvenience to residents.
The project, which has an investment volume of 6.6 million euros, is funded by federal, state, and city funds. Over 80 percent of the connections within this project have already been laid, with around 430 "white spots" throughout the city having fiber optic cables laid since April 2024.
The fiber optic network expansion is progressing in these "white spots" to improve connectivity and provide a stable connection for digital learning, working, streaming, gaming, smart home technologies, and Industry 4.0 simultaneously.
The Mayor of Brunswick, Dr. Thorsten Kornblum, has hailed the expansion as a forward-looking step that makes the city fit for the digital and connected world. Special regulations have been introduced for schools and industrial areas in relation to the number of school classes or internet-based workplaces.
Peter Richter, Regional Representative of the Telekom, stated that the funded expansion complements their efforts in expanding 105,000 households and business locations with fiber optics in the private sector. A fiber optic connection is also beneficial for climate protection, as it consumes significantly less energy than the copper network.
