City prohibits the construction of any abattoir within city limits

In a significant decision made on July 14th, the city council of Aschaffenburg has decided not to provide land for a new slaughterhouse, effectively ending the operations at the current site. This decision comes after a series of animal welfare violations and a suspension of slaughtering in March 2025.

The current slaughterhouse is situated in close proximity to the city works and the fire department, raising concerns about its suitability for continued operation. The city council's decision does not allow for the continuation of operations at the current location, and they have also rejected the continuation under a new lessee.

The decision was made in a non-public meeting, and the search results do not provide information about which organization is the tenant (Pächter) of the slaughterhouse (Schlachthaus) in Aschaffenburg. However, it is known that the city does not have any development-ready land that meets the requirements for a slaughterhouse.

The Food Safety and Veterinary Authority (KBLV) initially prohibited the private operator of the Aschaffenburg slaughterhouse from carrying out slaughtering due to severe animal welfare violations in 2023. Slaughtering resumed at the Aschaffenburg slaughterhouse on September 11th, 2023, after staff changes, training, and modifications to operating procedures and technical facilities.

In January 2025, the city and the lessor reached an agreement, stipulating that the lessor must cease the slaughtering operations by June 30th, 2026 at the latest, vacate the premises by December 31st, 2026 at the latest, and comply with animal welfare regulations. The lessor, however, did not accept the termination, leading the city to file an eviction lawsuit with the Aschaffenburg Regional Court.

The city council's decision was influenced by the assessment of an interfractional working group from CSU, SPD, and Greens, who expressed opposition to the continuation of slaughtering under the current conditions from a professional, economic, and strategic point of view. The majority of the city council sees no future for a slaughterhouse within the city limits.

The city council terminated the lease agreement for the Aschaffenburg slaughterhouse on September 18th, 2023, due to animal welfare violations. The current site is of particular importance for their further development, and the city does not have any alternatives that meet the requirements for a slaughterhouse. The future of the Aschaffenburg slaughterhouse remains uncertain as the legal proceedings continue.
